Corpse Flower Expected To Bloom At Orange Coast College

People will be lining up at Orange Coast College this week just to get a sniff of the rank smelling corpse flower housed on campus.

 

The Amorphophallus titanum plant, known as the corpse flower, is expected to bloom sometime this week. The plant, known as Little Dougie, will be on display in the administration building from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Once the flower blooms, however, all visitors will be allowed to stay until 10:00 to take in all the ambiance.

 

While some corpse plants can weigh up to 200 pounds, Little Dougie weighs in at a relatively petite 30 pounds and stands five feet tall.

 

Andrea Rangno, a college spokesperson, said that the corpse flowers are “really beautiful” when they flower. When the flower blooms, it will display magenta petals that will form a skirt around the base of the plant.

 

The plant gets its name because when it blooms, it smells like something dead. Joe Stead, the horticulture coordinator for the college, stated that the last corpse flower the college had was in a greenhouse and when it bloomed the smell was so strong they had to turn on fans for about four hours.

 

No doubt. This will be a memorable experience for those who visit the college this week.

 

Orange Coast College is located in Costa Mesa, California and boasts one of the country’s largest and most revered public nautical programs. It is one of the largest community colleges in the nation, enrolling more than 25,000 students each semester.

 

The college recently received a $1 million donation from a retired former instructor. Mary McChesney has donated the money to go towards the new planetarium, currently under construction. The money will go towards a Foucault pendulum, which is used to determine the rotation of the Earth. It will be the only pendulum of its kind in all of Orange County.
